Authentic Self

Been toastmasters since April 2013, taken multiple long breaks in between, you must be wondering what’s this guy up to. I have always been asking this question to myself, why join back Toastmasters again and again. Here are some of my thoughts. First time, I went on stage to speak up was when I must be 11 years old. The speakers before me were vibrant, confident and loud. Seeing them, I decided I should also be as loud as possible. This way I will receive more applauses. But when, I reached the stage, my voice vanished, my body acted like a pendulum and without utteringRead More →

THE JOY OF GIVING

Why does someone join Toastmasters? What drives a person to volunteer? There is no monetary gain. Volunteering demands time, effort and energy. There might be something truly rewarding that nudges people to. That something is the JOY of GIVING. This is why people flock to volunteer across multitude of organizations. Volunteering makes a person humble, grounded and more human. It brings me great joy to state that Toastmasters International recently stood third among all the volunteering organizations in the world. Apart from being a volunteer, a toastmaster has an opportunity to grow and polish his/her public speaking as well as leadership skills. A toastmaster canRead More →

A BUTTERFLY TALE: THE FLIGHT OF REVIVAL

It was the other day afternoon. I had just renewed my Toastmasters’ Membership, and I was brooding on whether spending the amount was wise, especially in this time of crisis. My garden boasts of a plethora of flowers. All seemed revived and rejuvenated after the short spell of rain, an hour before. Suddenly I spotted a butterfly. There is something about the butterflies that seems to inspire us. Its metamorphosis from an unostentatious caterpillar to a grandiloquent beauty blessed with the gift of flight, carries a strong message that speaks to our own capacity to move through stages of life, reflecting our own voyages ofRead More →

Why Should I Renew?

“Why did you join Toastmasters?” Do you remember? Was it to gain communication skills? Or was it to polish your leadership skills? Or was it to network? Or was it something entirely different? Do you have it written somewhere? If no, then right away take a piece of paper and jot it down, and if your answer is yes, then you have already crossed a major hurdle towards becoming an excellent communicator and great leader. Toastmasters is a platform where you can learn and grow like nowhere else. You just need to know what you want to learn. You just need to know where youRead More →

Did you reach this far to only reach this far?

August 2015 when I stepped in toastmasters. The start was slow but the flow kept me improving. As we grow up, the challenges in life also intensified which kept me occupied in other things in life. Eventually I did not renew after 2.5 years or five consecutive terms in toastmaster. March 2018 was my last month in toastmasters and after 1.5 years I realized it was my Cardinal sin not to renew and continue in toastmasters. After a long break I thought to put a brake on the break and made my entry again on 1st January 2020. While speaking I genuinely realized that theRead More →

RENEW YOUR PROMISE, REVIVE YOUR SPIRIT!

Life doesn’t always work according to your hopes and plans. There always seems to be some unseen or unforeseen circumstances that alters the path to your promises. The promises that you made to yourself when you were a child might not be relevant to you anymore or might be too far fetched now. But at that time it was like a dopamine, a perpetual fuel to your spirit which drove you forward. When I was younger I always had the hopes of escaping from my world and live somewhere I thought would be fun, easy and comfortable. I promised my self that I would experienceRead More →

Fuelling the spirit

Any relationship is based on a promise. We make a promise to our partner that we will keep contributing, keep taking care, keep investing in common goals. We also make a promise to ourselves that we will keep enjoying the adventures that the relationship brings and keep learning to be better people through the experience. Ultimately, that relationship could take both partners through a journey that lifts the spirits. But does that always happen? A married couple is ecstatic during the first year, but gradually, familiarity brings forth a tinge of apathy. A new mother goes gaga over every single activity of her new-born child,Read More →

Create your own happiness

Just until a couple of months ago, I held this picture-perfect concept in my mind regarding what happiness should look and feel like. Theoretically, I knew that I was the only one who could truly make myself happy but I overlooked to decide what happiness would actually mean for me. I had a rough sketch in my mind that I would be doing a work that I would enjoy and pay me well such that I can afford frequent trips and adventures be it national or overseas. Second, but not of any less importance, I imagined having great and nurturing relationships. However, this idea ofRead More →

Create Your Own Happiness

How does one become happy? Is there a magical formula for happiness? The answer to these questions, my friends, lies within. There is no one size-fits all solution to all our problems since we are all different. 150+ days of solitude post the lockdown have taught me a few valuable life-lessons on how to be happy. My 10 commandments of happiness are: 1. Allocate a minimum of an hour every day to unwind and do what you love doing the most. It could be cooking, dancing, reading, catching up with someone or just about anything that makes you happy! 2. Choose not to respond toRead More →

Create your own happiness

“Happiness does not come automatically. It is not a gift that good fortune bestows upon us and reversal of fortune takes back” It depends on us alone. One does not become happy overnight, but with patient labor, day after day, happiness is constructed but that requires efforts & time. Now, this is my personal experience, No one can give you true happiness except yourself, not your charming lover, best friend or sweetest family members can bring you the blue sky of happiness. I read it somewhere that albert Einstein’s son asked him for secret of happiness & learning. To which Einstein replied succinctly that findRead More →

Finding happiness!

Right at the moment when lockdown started, I was quite unsure how to deal with it for two main reasons. First being at home for 30 long days was making me very anxious. Second on what will I do in this complete lockdown at home? Luckily being with family is something I was grateful especially with observing so many people missing their mother, wife, or husband’s food (yes guys can also cook). Now to be very honest with you one thing I was very scared of was how family relations will turn out. One thing I completely believe is that our modern lifestyle has madeRead More →

CREATE YOUR OWN HAPPINESS

Creating our own happiness means looking for something that is not there in the first place. Alternatively, we want to substitute all the bad experiences and memories with joy. Our aim is to be ecstatic. To be free from all the negative emotions of life like anxiety, fear, anger, jealousy, envy, rejection which ultimately results in sadness. The purest form of happiness is to watch a new born baby. All the misery in the world cannot stop the new born from enjoying his own company which looks like he is on cloud nine. As the new born grows and becomes an infant, he starts recognizingRead More →

Switch on the light

When you enter a dark room, what is the first thing you do? Switch on the light? Similarly, in your dark times, if you remember to switch on the light, you can create your own happiness. In the book, The Prisoner of Azkaban, Dumbledore says a wonderful line, “Happiness can be found in the darkest of times, if one, only, remembers to turn on the light.” We are the creator and the owner of our happiness and we have the control button of it too. When the lockdown began, all schools were closed and the work from home culture started. As a woman, I wasRead More →

The Art of Being Happy

“How are you so cheerful all the time?” “How are you always happy and smiling?” Some of the questions, I get asked every now and then. My friends and peer ask me many a time, What’s the secret of my happiness? And every time I transport back to my past. Two years ago I was going through a very rough patch in my life. My self-confidence had taken a hit. I felt dejected, helpless and lonely. I distanced myself from my friends and family .With therapy I recovered from depression and self harm. Create Your Own Happiness

Years ago- “Mumma, I don’t feel happy!” “Why?” “I don’t know… Maybe you cook for me, my favorite masala dosa and I will be happy again?!” “Fine!” Year after year slid by slowly; and so, did nifty negotiations with Mumma. Hot dosas are no longer a kitchen away but need elaborate planning & execution! That which felt like magic – now has revealed its painstaking paraphernalia of – overnight soaking, grinding, fermenting and then slathering onto a hot pan for a crispy moment of flaky happiness. Mumma’s magic now happens once in many blue moons. Thus, my shortcut to happiness is a long way away!Read More →
