Why does someone join Toastmasters? What drives a person to volunteer? There is no monetary gain. Volunteering demands time, effort and energy. There might be something truly rewarding that nudges people to. That something is the JOY of GIVING. This is why people flock to volunteer across multitude of organizations. Volunteering makes a person humble, grounded and more human.
It brings me great joy to state that Toastmasters International recently stood third among all the volunteering organizations in the world. Apart from being a volunteer, a toastmaster has an opportunity to grow and polish his/her public speaking as well as leadership skills. A toastmaster can align himself with the greater purpose of giving back by the virtue of volunteering and has ample opportunities to learn and improve himself when he connects with fellow toastmasters.
When the world was hit by COVID-19 pandemic, all our meetings came to a standstill. Amidst the world filled with fear, our meetings commenced remotely on an online platform. Pandemic blessed me with the power to connect with Toastmasters clubs across the world. I realized that Toastmasters is a way to socialize, a platform to connect with prospective mentors and also with the people who are eager to learn from you.
Our club being a corporate club became a guinea pig for our organization. How our club performed during the last eight months was considered a yardstick for our future existence. Membership renewal became a roller coaster ride for us so much so that we even thought of taking membership at another Toastmasters club to continue association with Toastmasters. Luckily, our membership was renewed despite the administrative difficulties and the roller coaster ride had a pleasant ending.
Why I and fellow toastmasters from my club became so inclined to continue our journey with Toastmasters despite all the difficulties coming our way? It is because we realized the big picture – the immense opportunity to learn
and grow, power to develop genuine connections all over the world and last but not the least, the JOY of GIVING.
